Character ethic versus personality ethic

The beginning of 2024 is a time for reflection and setting New Year Resolutions. Often, we find ourselves reverting to old habits by the end of January. The question is, why do well-intentioned people find it so hard to change the course of their lives for the better?

Perhaps the answer is that we try to change the wrong things. For his best-selling book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", Steven Covey studied achievement and success over the past two hundred years. He found that earlier writings emphasised what he called the "Character Ethic". These are qualities like integrity, humility, courage, patience, modesty, and treating others as you wish to be treated. The message was simple. True success and enduring happiness can only be experienced by integrating certain key principles into our basic lives.

More recent literature turned to what Covey calls the "Personality Ethic"; this defined success as a function of public image, positive mental attitude, communication skills and techniques for interacting with people to our advantage. This focus, like social media, is on how we are perceived by others rather than on our underlying essence. We place personality ahead of character, style ahead of substance, and the external ahead of the internal.

Perhaps this is the reason that New Year's resolutions fail. Painting the walls when the foundations are crumbling is just a waste of time and effort. What is really needed is a fundamental shift. We need to focus less reactively on the short-term attributes and goals that determine our image and more proactively on the enduring principles that determine the course and quality of our lives.
